About this work

About this work

An integral part of P4YE's wider, interconnected model of support.

Our detached youth work builds relationships, creates trust, and engages young people where they naturally spend their time. We take a proactive, relationship-led approach that meets young people on their own terms, without judgement or expectation. By going to where they are, we connect with young people who may not access traditional youth provision. We create opportunities for meaningful conversations, positive engagement and early intervention, helping young people feel heard, valued and supported. We recognise that young people's experiences and behaviours are shaped by more than individual choices. Family circumstances, peer relationships, school experiences, community environments, exploitation, socioeconomic disadvantage and access to opportunities can all influence their lives. Our approach to contextual youth work looks beyond the individual to understand the wider environments, relationships and influences that can increase vulnerability or create opportunities for positive change.

At P4YE, detached youth work is more than being present in the community. It is about building relationships, understanding context and creating meaningful connections that empower young people and support lasting change.

Supporting young people, parents and guardians and the wider community

Listening and connecting in the community

Since 2023, following a series of incidents in Croydon that escalated into serious youth violence, Project 4 Youth Empowerment (P4YE) has been commissioned to engage with young people (YP) involved in anti-social behaviour, those at risk of going missing, and those vulnerable to exploitation and involvement in serious youth violence.

Croydon town centre
We aimed to bridge the Gap Between Young People and Services - Act as a link between young people and support systems - Advocate for young people, ensuring their voices are heard by relevant agencies - Promote Inclusion and Social Cohesion
Barriers
Discrimination, stereotypes, and inequalities led to young people who are seldom heard not accessing mainstream services within their local communities
What changed
Knife crime in Croydon was reduced by 11.4% in Croydon between 2023 and 2024. Personal robbery was reduced by 23.6%, and instances of violence with injury were reduced by 10.4%, all positive trends.
